What is the Ferrara Buskers Festival?<\/h2>\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

Founded in 1987<\/strong> from the vision of Stefano Bottoni, a blacksmith from Ferrara with a passion for music, the Ferrara Buskers Festival has grown into the world's largest and longest-running street art festival.<\/strong>
The idea was simple in its radicalism: hand the city over to street artists, tear down the stage, and put the street in its place. No distance between the artist and the audience\u2014just the magic of someone picking a corner of the pavement and turning it into a theatre in a matter of seconds.
Bottoni took the project to the Mayor of Ferrara and, from that moment on, there was no looking back.<\/p>

In 1989 Lucio Dalla<\/strong> performed a duet with Jimmy Villotti among the busker groups, blending into the crowd like any ordinary street performer. No posters, no announcements. Anyone who happened to be there stumbled upon a concert they never could have planned for.
It has happened many times since: Franco Mussida<\/strong> of PFM, Edoardo Bennato, Angelo Branduardi, Modena City Ramblers<\/strong>. Nel 2015 Bobby Solo<\/strong>. On 26 August 2015, from the drawbridge of the Castello Estense, Gianna Nannini<\/strong> gave a surprise performance on piano and vocals, accompanied by Christian Lohr. Very few knew it was going to happen; those who were there have never forgotten it.<\/p>

Since 2025, Omar Pedrini has offcially joined the artistic direction of the festival and 2025 also saw the creation of the Gianna Nannini Award<\/strong>: the first music award named after a living artist\u2014not to celebrate the past, but to recognise those who continue to inspire through their unconventional choices.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t

On the Sunday before the festival, the Buskers Festival kicks off in Comacchio, the town of canals just fifty kilometres from Ferrara. A preview set in the lagoon town with a charm all its own: the bridges, the canals, and the setting sun reflecting on the water as the backdrop for the performances.

That ability is no improvisation. Behind every performance lie years of study, technique, and an extraordinary knack for handling the unexpected. The busker is perhaps the most complete artist in existence, because they have to win over every single spectator each time they step onto their asphalt stage.<\/p>

Don't overplan.<\/strong> The Festival works best when you let the city guide you. Pick a starting area, then follow the music. The next show is always just around the corner.

Head out early.<\/strong> The early hours, between 7 pm and 9 pm, are when the alleys are still manageable and you can get up close to every artist. After 10 pm, the town centre gets crowded and moving around takes a bit more patience.

Il The late-night festival<\/strong> is worth staying the extra night. From midnight in the courtyard of the Castello Estense, the atmosphere transforms completely.
