Ferrara Buskers Festival: the city transformed into a stage every August
As summer draws to a close, Ferrara lights up with a vibrant, contagious energy. Wandering through the alleys of the historic centre, you need only follow the sound of music drifting in the distance. Round the corner and you find yourself right in the middle of an extraordinary performance, standing in the front row to applaud an international artist ready to head off to a new corner of the globe tomorrow. The Ferrara Buskers Festival is an immersive experience, where the entire city comes alive and finds its rhythm alongside you.
What is the Ferrara Buskers Festival?
Founded in 1987 from the vision of Stefano Bottoni, a blacksmith from Ferrara with a passion for music, the Ferrara Buskers Festival has grown into the world's largest and longest-running street art festival.
The idea was simple in its radicalism: hand the city over to street artists, tear down the stage, and put the street in its place. No distance between the artist and the audience—just the magic of someone picking a corner of the pavement and turning it into a theatre in a matter of seconds.
Bottoni took the project to the Mayor of Ferrara and, from that moment on, there was no looking back.
In 1989 Lucio Dalla performed a duet with Jimmy Villotti among the busker groups, blending into the crowd like any ordinary street performer. No posters, no announcements. Anyone who happened to be there stumbled upon a concert they never could have planned for.
It has happened many times since: Franco Mussida of PFM, Edoardo Bennato, Angelo Branduardi, Modena City Ramblers. Nel 2015 Bobby Solo. On 26 August 2015, from the drawbridge of the Castello Estense, Gianna Nannini gave a surprise performance on piano and vocals, accompanied by Christian Lohr. Very few knew it was going to happen; those who were there have never forgotten it.
Since 2025, Omar Pedrini has offcially joined the artistic direction of the festival and 2025 also saw the creation of the Gianna Nannini Award: the first music award named after a living artist—not to celebrate the past, but to recognise those who continue to inspire through their unconventional choices.
What happens during the festival
The programme in numbers
Every edition draws over 250 selected artists from around twenty countries, featuring more than 60 shows every evening scattered throughout the historic town centre. There is no set route to follow—every evening brings a new exploration.
The preview in Comacchio
On the Sunday before the festival, the Buskers Festival kicks off in Comacchio, the town of canals just fifty kilometres from Ferrara. A preview set in the lagoon town with a charm all its own: the bridges, the canals, and the setting sun reflecting on the water as the backdrop for the performances.
If your stay coincides with this date, it is well worth including Comacchio in your itinerary.
What is busking, the art that turns the street into a stage
The busker chooses a city corner and transforms it, without warning, into a theatre. There are no stage lights, no set design, nor the guaranteed silence of an auditorium. There is only the street, the passers-by, the hum of distant traffic, and the ability to capture the attention of someone who had no intention of stopping.
That ability is no improvisation. Behind every performance lie years of study, technique, and an extraordinary knack for handling the unexpected. The busker is perhaps the most complete artist in existence, because they have to win over every single spectator each time they step onto their asphalt stage.
Each year, the Ferrara Buskers Festival selects the very best performers in the world. What you see on the streets is no second-rate art: it is the pinnacle of the genre, carefully chosen and brought for a few days to the UNESCO World Heritage city of Ferrara.

How to make the most of it: our top tips
Don't overplan. The Festival works best when you let the city guide you. Pick a starting area, then follow the music. The next show is always just around the corner.
Head out early. The early hours, between 7 pm and 9 pm, are when the alleys are still manageable and you can get up close to every artist. After 10 pm, the town centre gets crowded and moving around takes a bit more patience.
Il The late-night festival is worth staying the extra night. From midnight in the courtyard of the Castello Estense, the atmosphere transforms completely. The crowds thin out, the music plays on, and the floodlit Castle creates a backdrop like no other. Admission is free, and it is easily one of the highlights of the Festival.

How do you get around during the Festival?
The historic centre is a traffic-restricted zone (ZTL), so getting around on foot or by bicycle is best. All performances are within short walking distance of each other.
