Ferrara and its events: the calendar we always keep on our bedside table
From the historic Palio and the Buskers Festival to major art exhibitions, the Jazz Club and the opera season.
An enduring guide, crafted by locals with over twenty years of insider knowledge.
When is the best time to visit Ferrara?” is the question we are asked most often. The honest answer: there is no wrong time. However, there are some extraordinary moments, and this guide shares them all.
We have lived in the Addizione Erculea for over twenty years. Every May, we have heard the Palio drums echoing through our square; every August, we have watched Piazza Trento e Trieste transform; and we have guided hundreds of guests as they discover a city that never stands still. For every single event, you will find its true character and history right here. Specific dates and this year’s schedule can be found on our dedicated pages, which we update every season.

Exhibitions at Palazzo dei Diamanti: Ferrara, a capital of art
Its 8,500 diamond-pointed marble blocks subtly shift in colour with the changing daylight. Since 1991, the Ferrara Arte Foundation has brought world-class exhibitions to this venue, collaborating with the likes of the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Prado, and the Tate. The programme changes every year; the quality never does.
You can find the current exhibition calendar, booking details, and everything else you need to know on our dedicated page.
The Palio of Ferrara: a month of living Renaissance
Dating back to 1259, the Palio di Ferrara is among the oldest spectacles of its kind in the world. It is far more than just a race: it is a month-long celebration during which the city completely transforms, dressed in the vibrant colours of its eight historic contrade—four districts within the medieval walls and four boroughs outside them.
The races are held in Piazza Ariostea—formerly known as Piazza Nova, the very heart of the Addizione Erculea. The celebrations launch in March with the Omaggi al Duca (Homage to the Duke), reaching a spectacular crescendo in May with the Magnifico Corteo—a grand parade of over a thousand participants in Renaissance costume—and the historic races on the fourth Sunday of the month.
Four distinct races take place: the putti (boys’ race), the putte (girls’ race), the donkey race, and the final horse race. In the days leading up to the main event, the contrade flag-wavers compete in spectacular displays across the central squares. The traditional propitiatory eve-of-race dinners, hosted at the individual contrada headquarters, are also warmly open to visitors."
OUR INSIDER TIP
Ferrara draws lively crowds every weekend in May: we highly recommend booking well in advance if you wish to experience the magic of the Palio.
The Ferrara Buskers Festival: the most beautiful street music in the world
AUGUST
Established in 1988, it has grown into the world’s oldest and largest street music festival. Every year, hundreds of hand-picked performers from dozens of countries transform the historic centre into an open-air stage without curtains—filling the alleyways, performing under the porticoes, and breathing life into every square.
It is not a show you simply go to watch; it is a city that completely transforms around you. You step out without a destination in mind and wander back in the dead of night, eyes full of wonder, having stumbled upon three Argentine accordionists under a portico, a Japanese juggler in front of the Castle, and a vocal quartet on the Cathedral steps. Admission is free, with voluntary contributions for the artists.
Ferrara’s Theatre Season
Teatro Comunale Claudio Abbado: a velvet jewel
FROM SEPTEMBER TO MAY
The Teatro Comunale of Ferrara, dedicated to the legendary conductor Claudio Abbado, is one of the most prestigious traditional opera houses in the Emilia-Romagna region. From September to May, its rich season unfolds with over thirty events a year, spanning opera, ballet, drama, and classical concerts. Meanwhile, the Ridotto foyer hosts the 'Prima della Prima' preview encounters, which are warmly open to everyone.
Teatro Nuovo: A Touch of Roaring Twenties Glamour in Central Ferrara
FROM SEPTEMBER TO MAY
We locals simply call it 'the Nuovo'—and that affectionate nickname says it all. This is the city's theatre in the truest, most everyday sense of the word; the place where generations of Ferraresi have come to laugh, to be moved, and to softly sing along to operatic arias they know by heart.
The building is one of the architectural jewels of 20th-century Ferrara: a theatre of refined elegance, built in the 1920s in the vibrant heart of the city. To step inside is to take a step back in time, immersing yourself in an atmosphere that has been meticulously preserved.
The programme is wonderfully diverse, spanning West End-style musicals, classic drama, live concerts, and stand-up comedy. This eclectic mix is curated for a broad audience seeking high-quality entertainment packed with live emotion.
Se stai cercando un motivo in più per concederti un weekend a Ferrara, controllare cosa c’è in cartellone al Nuovo è sempre una buona idea.
OUR INSIDER TIP
The Ferrara Jazz Club: Live Music inside a Renaissance Bastion
FROM OCTOBER TO MAY
Ferrara hides a true gem of the Italian music scene: the Ferrara Jazz Club, consistently ranked by critics among the very best jazz clubs in Italy for its artistic excellence and world-class international line-ups.
Its uniqueness lies not only in the music. The club is housed inside the Torrione San Giovanni, a formidable 1490 Renaissance bastion woven into the city walls. Sitting beneath a five-century-old brick vault, watching the stage glow in the darkness of an ancient military fortress, is an experience that few other places in the world can match.
OUR INSIDER TIP
We know the club’s artistic director personally and have collaborated for years to offer the warmest welcome to music lovers staying with us. If you are interested, simply drop us a line: we will gladly connect you directly.
